Public put forward ideas for vacant city plot
Ideas ranging from a recreational area in the heart of North East Hamilton to a specialised vendor market were just two of a host of suggestions for the newly acquired lot bought by the City of Hamilton. The recent acquisition was one of the last deals signed by former Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling, who launched a public opinion poll on how best to use the property on the north west corner of Court and Dundonald Streets.A meeting was held under the previous administration with residents and business owners in the church hall of Emmanuel Baptist Church. An online survey was also conducted to gauge public opinion.“The attendees provided a number of great suggestions,” said newly installed Mayor Graeme Outerbridge. “The results have been collected and the Property Committee will make a decision in the coming months on how best to move forward with the vacant lot.”Mr Gosling announced the purchase in April and said the community “should be involved with the decision-making process. This is a prime piece of property that should be used to give something back to and serve the community”.He also expressed the hope that the land would be used as a central site for a Bermudian art and craft market “where people could walk about freely”, before the municipal elections ushered in a new administration; led by Mr Outerbridge.
