Visitor pleased at burglar’s prison sentence

A Canadian visitor whose trip to the Island was marred by a confrontation with a burglar has applauded his four-year prison sentence.Reuben Stroble and his family were staying at Sandpiper Guest Apartments in Warwick when Jamiko Bean broke into their rooms one night. The Toronto Police Inspector was woken by the 30-year-old, who made off with his son’s $700 phone.Magistrates’ Court heard the June 12 incident was part of a drug-induced spree Bean was charged with 15 offences related to that event, and sentenced on 11 counts.Insp Stroble told The Royal Gazette he thought the four-year sentence was fair.“Absolutely. If it was over here, he probably wouldn’t get that amount,” he said.“The thing I like so much is the speed with which the justice system responded in sentencing compared with here, where the wheels turn a lot slower.”In passing sentence on Monday, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner invoked a recent judgement by Chief Justice Ian Kawaley which noted that offences against tourists inflict harm on a valuable industry.Insp Stroble was visiting Bermuda with a group of about 50 wedding guests. It was at the end of their visit that Bean climbed onto a balcony outside where some of the guests were staying. His struggle with the locked door woke the occupants, who called the police. Bean moved on quickly to another room.Insp Stroble said he’d left his own door unlocked for his two sons to come in later that night.“Opportunity knocks,” he stated. “Criminals are opportunistic. If you give them an opportunity they will seize it. We were not the target per se.”He said he woke and found a masked and helmeted man in the apartment, who fled quickly with his son’s cell phone.“My wife was upset by it all,” Insp Stroble said. “But we had a great time visiting.”Likening Bermuda to a small town, he said he was originally from the Island.“We emigrated to Canada when I was seven but I have relatives [in Bermuda] still. We had a great time visiting and I will be back there — no doubt.”He said he had no hard feelings toward Bean, who stole bikes, liquor and other items in his May 12 to June 15 crime spree.“A lot of it was to feed a drug habit. Given that extended time in jail, I hope that can detox him so that he can come out with a clear mind,” Insp Stroble said.
