Former Island resident found hanging in UK prison cell
A former Bermuda resident convicted of killing his stepfather in the UK was found dead in his prison cell.A spokeswoman for the UK prison service said that Nathan Vaughan-Jones, 34, was found hanging in his cell, in Lewes Prison, East Sussex, at around 8.30pm on Friday, and pronounced dead half-an-hour later.“As with all deaths in custody, the Independent Prison and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation,” the spokeswoman said.UK media reports have said that he was not subject to suicide prevention measures at the time.Vaughan-Jones pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility after stabbing 63-year-old Nigel Ross 41 times in the garden of an East Sussex home. He was subsequently sentenced to 11 years in prison.He had been living in Bermuda with his wife, Vikki, but had returned to the UK to seek help from the NHS as he did not have health insurance for treatment in Bermuda.He was staying with his sister Natasha in South Chailey when the incident happened on March 29 last year.Vaughan-Jones had confronted Mr Ross in connection to a long-running dispute between Natasha and the victim, who was described as being controlling.While Vaughan-Jones said that his memory of the incident was patchy, he recalled producing a knife to threaten Mr Ross.He had been diagnosed with a virulent form of myalgic encephalomyelitis and depression, and was described normally as a gentile, generous and decent man.
