Victor Scott was yesterday named interim chief of staff by the Bermuda Hospitals Board.He will serve in the position for up to three months, leading medical chiefs at the hospital.The post was held by Donald Thomas, who was put on administrative leave earlier this summer.A BHB spokeswoman said that Dr Scott’s three-month run as chief of staff will allow the Board to complete their review of Dr Thomas, but she added that a recruitment process is in progress for a new chief of staff.“This had been agreed with the chief of staff prior the review as part of BHB's succession planning process," the spokeswoman said.Dr Scott previously served as senior vice president for health sciences at Howard University.BHB chief executive officer Venetta Symonds said: “To have a Bermudian physician of Dr Scott’s calibre and experience in this interim role will ensure high quality leadership.“Although three months may not sound long, there are many clinical quality and operational readiness projects that cannot be delayed during this time.”BHB chairman Wendall Brown added: “BHB has a very full and complex agenda of improvements planned, and I am very reassured that they will progress under Dr Scott for this interim period.”Born in Bermuda, Dr Scott graduated from the Howard University College of Medicine, and subsequently served as the chief of the division of gastroenterology for almost 30 years.He was appointed to senior vice president for health sciences in 2005, and held the position until he retired in 2008.Since then, he has continued to volunteer assistance to the gastroenterology division and assists the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.His predecessor, Dr Thomas, was appointed as chief of staff in 2007, but was placed on administrative leave in July.A BHB spokeswoman said a Board review would be carried out, but would not reveal the reason for the review.
