Family: Herbal pills could have led to Chae's death
A herbal supplement could have contributed to the death of top footballer Chae Simmons, his family said in a statement yesterday.Mr Simmons, 34, died last month at the Lahey Clinic, in Massachusetts, where he had been hospitalised for four weeks after being transferred from the King Edward VII Memorial. Initially his family was told his death could remain a mystery,However his family released a statement which said: “Although there is still some uncertainty regarding the initial cause of his condition that was being treated during visits to KEMH, the ingestion of a herbal supplement compounded and worsened his condition to the point where it became life-threatening.“Although, Chae’s family and friends are deeply saddened by this tragedy we feel compelled to alert the public as we do not wish others to suffer the same fate. It appears that supplements that are marketed as healthy and are readily available and consumed by the public can be dangerous and detrimental to your health.“This incident although unfortunate highlights the importance of conducting your own due diligence regarding the ingredients contained in supposedly healthy supplements prior to use.”KEMH and Lahey refused to comment and that it could not be determined if the product was sold locally.Mr Simmons’ family refused to answer further questions.A six a side football tournament is currently being organised in memory of Chae and to assist with medical expenses. The tournament will be held Saturday, August 25 at Wellington Oval.Additionally, donations can be made to the LCCA’s HSBC a/c 010-287209-002, reference Chae Simmons.* We have not named the supplement as we have been unable to reach the manufacturer for comment.
