The Uptown Market Association for North East Hamilton has unveiled ambitious plans to “supersize” Labour Day celebrations on Union Square this year.Branded as the Uptown Carnival and Labour Celebration, the aim is to “breathe new life into the day’s events while ensuring that Bermuda’s heritage is not forgotten”.Plans include carnival bands, a parade with floats, a supervised fun park, food stalls, a main entertainment zone and two crown and anchor pits.According to spokesman Elmore Warren “the ring-fence main entertainment zone” will be designated as a licensed area for “the supervised sale and consumption of alcohol”.“We have approached Corporation of Hamilton to designate the EEZ area the place to party and drink in the street with plastic cups,” said Mr Warren.“For safety, responsibility and best practice we are encouraging partygoers to catch public transport and taxis into the city and pre-arrange rides home.“Using temporary bars spread strategically across the zone to avoid bottlenecks we can ease service issues, the licensed areas are patrolled and controlled,” he added. “A visible security presence with Bermuda Police and Bermuda Regiment on hand.”Mr Warren continued: “We have taken inspiration from the New Orleans, Brooklyn and Notting Hill carnivals that attract large crowds committed to a daylong street party.“With the inclusion of television broadcast and IPTV this annual event will inform locals on a national level and attract the attention of visitors seeking a great and memorable time on the Island.”The day’s events will start with the annual road races hosted by the Bermuda Industrial Union, with the carnival bands due to “take to the roads from 11am, rain, blow or shine”, on September 3.Young entertainers will also be challenged to “create songs that honour the heroes of the labour movement past and present”.Planned participants include various majorette and gombey troupes, “scores of massive sound systems” and a host of stall that will line the streets of North Hamilton.“The Uptown Carnival will arguably become the most exciting annual family event in Bermuda for locals and tourist alike,” said Mr Warren.He said the event has had an “initial buy-in” from the City of Hamilton, North Hamilton residents, the BIU Labour Day Committee, North East Hamilton businesses, the Bermuda Department of Tourism and the Bermuda Police Service.
