Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines will reduce the number of calls to Bermuda in 2013 by 11.Tourism news websites posted reports of cutbacks “across the board” including cutbacks by RCCL and regular calls in Hamilton will end later this month when the Veendam completes her 19th and final voyage from New York City.The RCCL blog site quotes a spokesman from the Bermuda Government who said: “We had early discussion with Royal Caribbean to include additional Grandeur of the Seas calls from Baltimore, with a weekend stop in Bermuda and continuing to Maine and other locations in New England.”The spokesman added: “Royal Caribbean decided that these cruises were not selling well, and decided not to include them in their 2013 itinerary.“However, we will still have 15 calls from the Grandeur of the Seas in 2013,” he said.“We will also have 29 calls from the Explorer of the Seas in 2013, compared to 30 Explorer calls in 2012.”At the end of this year, Explorer of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas will have made 55 calls to Bermuda between the two ships. But next year, Grandeur of the Seas will replace Enchantment of the Seas to make ten less stops, for a total of 15 calls.Another website run by Travel Weekly said: “The Grandeur will alternate Bermuda and Bahamas cruises instead of exclusively sailing to Bermuda.”It was also noted that “Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship, the Breakaway, will sail Bermuda cruises from New York when it enters service next April”.The report also stated: “At least four major cruise lines have reduced Bermuda cruises in the past two years.And after the 2012 summer season “Holland American will not return to Bermuda on regularly scheduled cruises.”This newspaper reported in November last year that “Carnival Cruise Lines axed 11 of the 12 planned visits to Bermuda in 2012 because it couldn’t cash in on the prime time summer spots.”Then Transport Minister Derrick Burgess said at that time the cruise ship operator’s last-minute decision was based on “it being given the less desirable berths”.But he said the 2012 season would still “represent the second highest number of cruise visitors in Bermuda’s history”.
