Maritime Ops hit by severe lightning strike
Technicians are working to repair damage to Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre after it suffered a severe lightning strike.“It was unnerving,” said one employee who was standing outside the building when it was struck at about 1pm on Thursday.Equipment was damaged and wires were fried but a spokesman was unable to estimate the cost of the incident yesterday.The Centre said in a statement yesterday: “During a thunderstorm passing the vicinity of Fort George, Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre sustained a severe lightning strike, hitting the operations building directly.“This has had a serious effect on our stations telephones, radio communication equipment and Computer systems. We have technicians working diligently on-site and full repairs are in effect to enable all our equipment is brought back on line as soon as possible.“Bermuda Radio will keep mariners advised of our equipment status using Notice to Mariners, broadcast during routine schedules.”Information can also be accessed using the website, www.marops.bm linking through ‘Mariner Warnings’.
