Miss Devonshire named Miss Teen 2012

Miss Devonshire Zaire Bean was last night crowned the tenth Miss Teen Bermuda Islands at the end of a long night of competition.The 17-year-old Berkeley Institute student also won the Miss Bermuda Island’s Teen Supermodel award, and was the first runner up for the Sweet Charity award.Miss Sandys, Kwame Harris, came second in the competition, while Miss Southampton Alicia Kirby rounded out the top three.Hundreds of people, including Premier Paula Cox, attended the event last night at the Fairmont Southampton Princess, cheering on their favourites and enjoying the entertainment.During the evening, the audience was treated to a dance performance by the contestants set to the music of Whitney Houston, along with multiple power point presentations showing earlier rounds of the competition.Prior to last night, the competitors performed in talent and modelling competitions at Willow Bank and were photographed by a series of professional photographers as part of the Miss Photogenic competition.Miss St George’s South, Tiahana Booth, took home the award for talent, with Miss Harris and Miss St George’s North, Stevantae McCallan earning runner up and second runner up.Miss Bean was awarded the prize for the supermodel competition, edging past Miss Hamilton, Tyonasha Taylor and Miss Warwick, Zamora Symonds, who came second and third.And Miss Paget, Savanna Ramotar, earned the title of Miss Photogenic, with Miss McCallan and Miss Bean taking first and second runners up respectively.During last night’s finale, Miss Harris, was honoured with the Sweet Charity award for her work with the Agape House.In an essay written by Miss Harris and read to the audience, she said that her grandfather spent time at the home, and through that first hand experience she learned about the good work they do.“I have never viewed helping out Agape as a burden to me. It’s personal to me so I will always make time for them,” she said.Miss McCallan also took home won both the Personal Style award and Miss Congeniality Award.Judge Preston James Ephram II praised the contestants, saying that he has spoken to each of them and they all have proven themselves to be potential winners. “I see they are putting more than their best foot forward,” he said.Fellow judge Gina Spence agreed, saying: “They are just awesome.”Event organiser Tee’L said that it has been a challenge to put on the show for ten years, but he believed that the competition gives the competitors an opportunity to develop as people as well as shine in the spot light.“Its more that a beauty pageant,” he said. “It’s never been a beauty pageant.”
