Relief for relatives as hurricane causes little damage in Azores

Stormy weather: A satellite picture of Hurricane Gordon as it passed near to the Azores yesterday. The hurricane passed between San Miguel and Santa Maria, the two eastern-most islands of the archipelago.

Local residents with relatives in the Azores rushed to make contact yesterday after hurricane force winds from Gordon swept through the two eastern-most islands of the archipelago.Most relatives in Bermuda were relieved to hear that apart from a lot of rain, high winds and power outages, all was well with their family members.There were also reports of telephone service interruptions. One woman, who asked not to be named, said she was able to reach her relatives via Facebook.“I have many family members in the Azores but they said everything is okay, just lots of wind and rain, it didn't do much damage thank God for small blessings. I am on line with them now, thanks for caring she said.Most of her family lives in San Miguel. “They told me electrical power had been restored to most of the area and apart from damage to a few doors and windows there was very little damage,” she said.While packing hurricane force winds Gordon caused minor flooding and power outages in the Azores with a number of news agencies reporting fallen trees on several roadways.“Thank God it was nowhere near as bad as they were predicting it would be, forecasters were predicting the worst,” she added.The system has been downgraded to a tropical storm and at last check was moving ENE at 14 knots trekking towards Europe and losing strength. A spokesman for the Bermuda Weather Service said the storm is “likely to fizzle out before it reaches land”.
