Dramatic rescue as fishing boat sinks
Two men narrowly escaped with their lives when their 18-foot fishing boat capsized and sank off Devonshire Bay yesterday afternoon.Chris Ingham, a catastrophe analyst, was the first to spot the troubled vessel and raise the alarm.Mr Ingham said he had gone to Devonshire Bay to take some photos and noticed the boat navigating the channel.“I was looking to the west when I noticed a water spout. I turned around and for some reason turned back around just as the boat rolled in the waves and they capsized,” he said.“Both men recovered very quickly and were trying to get on top of the boat.”Mr Ingham said he immediately ran for help, alerted nearby fishermen, and called 911.Former MP Ottiwell Simmons was one of the men summoned to assist. “When we got there the boat was all mashed up and two people were in the water,” he told The Royal Gazette.“The boat was going under because of very heavy swells and they had to, I suppose, get away from the boat because they would have been knocked to pieces. And the swell took them out about 30 yards from the shoreline.”Mr Simmons said: “I just knew that these two fellows had no control. They were at the whim of the elements. It was heartbreaking to see.”The rescuers attempted to throw a rope to the two men, aged 40 and 60, but struggled against the current which was pulling them back out to sea.“In the back of my mind I feared for their lives,” said Mr Ingham. With the boat almost completely destroyed by the strong swells, only one of the men was holding onto a flotation device. The older man held onto a cooler but was being swept out to sea until his partner came to his rescue and started pulling him in toward the shore, he said.“We were throwing a bucket hoping it would provide some buoyancy and they could hold onto that,” Mr Simmons continued. But a strong swell eventually brought them closer to the shoreline which made it possible for the police to pull the pair onto the rocks.“It was the most dramatic thing I have ever seen in my life,” said Mr Simmons.“It was just unbelievable.”The police arrived at approximately 5.35pm.“In the abundance of caution both men were taken to KEMH where they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries and the fishing boat was severely damaged and has sunk,” said police in a statement.“Marine police are advising the maritime community to exercise caution when going out on the water as we are expecting very rough and unpredictable waters for the next few days.”
