Govt denies non-Bermudian has been given top post in communications department

Cabinet Office yesterday denied broadcast media reports that a non-Bermudian was being hired to head up the Department of Communication and Information. But it confirmed that a consultant had been hired for three months to review the results of a review into the operations of the Department and make recommendations."As a general rule, it would be highly imprudent to provide information to the media or the public regarding internal personnel and/or staffing matters.“Contrary to reports circulating, there is absolutely no truth that a foreign Director of DCI has been retained,” a Cabinet spokesperson said."To be clear, a Bermudian is currently serving as Acting Director of DCI, to facilitate and manage the day to day responsibilities of the department.“It should be noted however that the Cabinet Office has been engaged in a review of the operations of DCI over the past several months and a consultant has been engaged for a period of three months to review these proposals and to make recommendations on the management structure of the department.”The spokesperson went on to say that engaging outside consultants is “not unusual”."The overall exercise is to ensure that systems and staff engage in best practices that govern 21st Century Government information services. This is done against the background of Government's policy of good governance, transparency and accountability."Daphne Innerarity, understood to be a former consultant to the Progressive Labour Party was reported to have been engaged by Government.Cabinet Office did not respond to queries seeking confirmation on the identity of the consultant by presstime last night.
