The rust-covered Coralita was used to ferry passengers between Hamilton and Warwick despite having an expired safety certificate. The ageing vessel’s certificate of survey expired last Wednesday a Government spokeswoman said the ferry would continue to run until this afternoon. The certificate of survey, completed by an independent examiner, serves as confirmation that the ferry’s “machinery, gear and equipment” is “in good order and safe condition and adequate for the service intended”.The Royal Gazette found the boat covered in rust spots, with its token collector busted despite efforts made to repair it with gaffer tape.Government issued the following statement following questions from this newspaper: “The Marine and Ports Department confirmed today that the Coralita ferry will be taken off the commuter run on Monday, August 27.“The Department appreciates the condition of the vessel, however it was in service to assist in supplementing the Georgia ferry which was undergoing maintenance. Marine and Ports advised that the Georgia has been fully refurbished, which includes repainting and a rebuilt engine. It will return to service Monday afternoon.”
