Overflowing sewerage shuts down Pembroke business

A drainage borehole drilled into Bakery Lane, Pembroke has inundated the road with foul-smelling water.Pembroke Paint Company owner David Swift accused Health Department officials of “arrogance” in scheduling the drainage."It's arrogance," he said. "Our whole business is shut down, the smell is ridiculous, and we've got a hurricane coming."Health Department officials at the scene declined to speak with The Royal Gazette.According to Mr Swift the drilling was to alleviate the sewerage system at a neighbouring building cess pits at a Buzz Cafe have been overflowing since January.Drilling began at about 9am. A large stretch of the road is currently deep under water. Officials have insisted to Mr Swift that the liquid isn't sewage. The low-lying area near Pembroke Canal is subject to flooding. Mr Swift said the overflows from next door have disabled the pumps on his property that he will need for this weekend's expected storm.According to a workman, the 120ft hole is urgently required at the Buzz property, where the cess pits have been clogged with grease for several months.Mr Swift said the flooding was damaging his business and questioned why the drill couldn’t have been scheduled for the recent Labour Day holiday.
