Students are tasked to suggest replacement for City Hall fountains
Architecture students have been invited to put forward their ideas for a replacement for the water fountains at City Hall.Their submissions will then be judged as part of the Institute of Bermuda Architects 2012 Student Competition.“I am pleased that the Institute of Bermuda Architects has selected a prominent feature in the City of Hamilton to focus on for this year’s competition,” said Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge.“I look forward to seeing the winner, knowing that the judges would have to make a tough choice given the talent, creativity and ability of Bermuda’s budding architects.”The competition is due to be launched within the next few days. The city’s fountains were removed earlier this year. One of the most notable reasons for their disappearance was the cost of up to 90 loads of water a month “due to leaks in the old piping”.City board members will also go to the public, visit schools and meet organisations for suggestions on how the front of “one of Bermuda’s iconic buildings can be changed to be more welcoming”.It is hoped the suggestions will allow for major events like the Evolution Fashion Show held in July and provide opportunities for people to stop, relax and enjoy their lunch.Mr Outerbridge was also mindful that “residents are looking for a water feature”.On that note he said: “The fountain bowls are in storage so if need be, they can be returned with modern piping.“The competition will be formally announced shortly but I’m pleased to share this information with you early. So start thinking.”
