Bishop calls for ‘sensitivity’ over orientation debate
It’s time to exercise “sensitivity” in the debate over sexual orientation discrimination, says Lloyd Duncan head of the New Testament Church of God.Bishop Duncan, who is against changing the Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, told The Royal Gazette that he was “surprised” at the tone of the online comments opposing his views which were reported in this newspaper last month.Booking agent Fiona Campbell referenced the story and the online response in arguing that potential visitors can be put off by the Bishop’s views and what they see as a negative climate.Bishop Duncan was reluctant to comment on the impact his views may have had on potential visitors.“I made my personal position known, and the position of the church,” he said.“The issue of homosexuality seems to be an emotional and volatile issue. If there’s ever a time Bermuda needs healing it is now.”Bishop Duncan continued: “I want to exercise sensitivity to people who might be in that lifestyle and not act like I am devoid of love.”As to the perception that Bermuda is not gay friendly, Bishop Duncan said: “By and large, Bermuda still tends to be a very welcoming place, and people tend to be an embracing group of people. I can understand the fear, that’s why we want to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative and don’t mess with the in-between.”A spokesperson for the Rainbow Alliance of Bermuda, which aims to raise awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues said: “Human rights, and expanding on them, can only ever be ‘accentuating the positive’ and is always an important aspect of society to be discussed.”
