United Bermuda Party leader Kim Swan expressed his sadness at Tuesday’s fatal road accident at the spot where he had a ‘near death experience’ of his own.Mr Swan called for the Road Safety Council to evaluate the stretch of road near to Terceira’s gas station, North Shore Road, Devonshire, where Aaron Smith was killed on Tuesday afternoon.Mr Smith, 45, of St David’s, died in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after his motorcycle collided with a car travelling along the road.The accident happened yards from the spot where St George’s Cup Match star Travis Smith was killed in an accident in July 2006.And in July 2009, Mr Swan’s wife Cindy was injured in the same location, in an accident which led to car driver Jonathan Guishard pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm.Mr Swan and UBP colleague Charlie Swan said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Mr Aaron Smith, the Island's most recent fatality as a result of a road accident.“Personally, my wife Cindy and I are also sad hearing that news especially as it occurred in the same area where we had our near death experience and also next to the spot that claimed the life of St George's Cup Match star Travis Smith.“We will urge the Road Safety Council to evaluate this stretch of road — as a frequent serious accident spot — to determine if any additional warning signals or apparatus is required to lower speeds and heighten awareness to reduce the chance of an accident at this location.“We send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
