Gombeys coming together for big festival

Gombeys will be in action tomorrow.

Residents and visitors are being invited to feel the rhythms of Bermuda’s Gombey troupes at this year’s Gombey Festival. The annual festival, put on by the Department of Cultural Affairs, will be held tomorrow at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium. The event starts at 5:30pm.A spokeswoman for the event said: “The Gombey Festival aims to provide exposure to the folk art and traditions of an important Bermudian icon.”The event is one of only two events Islandwide where all of Bermuda’s Gombey troupes perform. This year will also feature special entertainment from St Kitt’s stilt walkers, called Mock-a-Jumbie.The two Mock-a-Jumbie dancers “will share their tradition of dance and highlight the importance of appreciating traditions and diversity of other cultures,” said the spokeswoman.Food vendors, Gombey-inspired face painting and Gombey crafts will all be available as well. The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors said: “This event has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years, and it’s a wonderful community event that showcases one of our most recognisable cultural icons — the Gombeys.“Aside from the May 24 Parade, there’s no other event where Bermudians can see all of our Gombey Troupes in one place, so we consider this a very special occasion, and I cannot think of a better way to spend a Saturday night than by dancing and enjoying the high energy of this uniquely cultural event.”The event is free to all. A rain date is set for September 23.
