Vehicle licensing abuse sparks change
TCD has limited public access to its online renewal system following abuse by uninsured motorists.Persons must now be covered by Colonial, BF&M, Argus or Freisenbruch-Meyer in order to renew their licences online. All other motorists must visit TCD, where they will be required to provide proof of valid insurance.Said a Government spokesman: “[The four named] providers are the only local motor vehicle insurers linked to the TCD operating system in real time so that when customers are renewing their private vehicle licences online, a current insurance policy will appear as valid at the TCD.“The Department became aware of some vehicles being licensed online without having a current insurance policy, even though customers claimed they had done so.”Colonial, BF&M, Argus and Freisenbruch-Meyer represent about 90 percent of the Island’s motorists, the spokesman added.“The management and staff of the TCD apologise for any inconvenience this necessary change may cause.”
