Border control roles are delineated in bill
A bill setting out the role of two Government Ministries in the arenas of immigration and border protection was tabled in the House of Assembly by Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief. The Bermuda Immigration and Protection (No 2) Bill reassigns the functions of the Department of Immigration to the Department of Border Control and the Department of Workforce Development.Mr Perinchief described the new bill as an “administrative instrument” to clearly delineate roles and functions which have previously been announced.Mr Perinchief’s Ministry has recently taken over the enforcement side of Customs through the new Department of Border Control. The department has been formed by an amalgamation of the elements of HM Customs and the Department of Immigration already engaged in that function. The Revenue Collection portion of Customs remains under the Ministry of Finance. The bill also establishes a Work Permits Board to replace the Board of Immigration. It will consist of between five and 13 people appointed by the Minister. The amendment act also clarifies the wording of the original act to make it clear that if an employee has their work permit revoked, or gets deported, it is their former employer who must bear the costs of that.
