New garbage trucks are ready to roll
Eight new garbage trucks costing a total of $1.1 million have been bought by the Ministry of Public Works to bring the fleet up to 19 vehicles. The new vehicles were purchased from HFI Truck Centre in New Jersey at a basic cost of $125,160 each. A Ministry spokesman said: “This represents a 35 percent reduction in the cost per vehicle over the previous shipment.”Solid Waste Manager Allan Hunt noted that one of the advantages is that spare parts will come from New Jersey as opposed to Japanese manufacturers. “This should further reduce the time these vehicles may be off the road for repairs.“However, as a number of these trucks are beyond 12 years old, the Ministry will have to decommission several trucks as it is simply no longer economically viable to keep them in the fleet.”
