Tips on energy saving at ‘lunch and learn’ events

Events ranging from a ‘lunch and learn’ geared to aiding the public understand their energy bills to an award-winning documentary “Chasing Ice” are in this year’s line-up for Caricom Energy Week in Bermuda.Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Marc Bean said the major focus of Energy Week, which runs to November 17 — is to increase the general public’s awareness of energy and their use of it.“It is about encouraging residents to conserve energy and make more efficient use of it. He added: “The cost of energy is just the tip of the iceberg ... there are so many other reasons to keep energy in the forefront of our minds.”Activities include a presentation on energy efficiency and conservation, a prizegiving ceremony for the winners of the Energy Limbo Competition where participants vied to use the least electricity during an almost year-long period as well as the screening of the documentary ‘Chasing Ice’ about the devastating effects of excessive reliance on fossil fuel generated energy.A ‘lunch and learn’ event with Belco entitled: ‘Understanding your energy bill: fuel purchases, embedded costs and inventory’ will address how an electrical bill is calculated, answer questions about those bills, explain how Belco purchases fuel, calculates fuel costs to the consumer, and manages fuel inventory.All the events are free and are at the Anglican Cathedral Hall on Church Street, Hamilton.
