Grand Slam stays in Bermuda until 2014
The PGA Grand Slam will remain at Port Royal until 2014, Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert announced yesterday.“This is great news for Bermuda to have the Grand Slam return for the next two years,” Mr Furbert said. “During the last six years of hosting this event the beauty of Bermuda has been seen in countless millions of households across the world.“I feel this is a great investment in our tourism product and attracts visitors to our shores to enjoy the picture perfect rounds of golf at our world class course.”Mr Furbert also noted that the terms and conditions for hosting the event are the same as past years.John Harvey, CEO of the Bermuda Hotel Association said that Mr Furbert should be praised for the announcement, saying: “We are aware that Miniser Furbert was up agaisnt another competing destination in the USA, but he pulled off a great, iconic marketing feat which all of Bermuda supports.”The 31st edition of the Grand Slam will be held on October 15 and 16 in 2013, while the dates for the 2014 event have yet to be finalised.The event, broadcast annually on TNT, reaches an audience of more than 400 million households in more than 85 countries.Mr Furbert said that PGA and TNT together spend just over $1 million on the Island at 60 service providers, and the combined value of media impressions for Bermuda, Port Royal and the Fairmont is just under $40 million.Asked for an update on the reopening of the St George’s Golf Course, Mr Furbert declined to comment saying that the matter was in the hands of the Ministry of Public Works.
