Streets are packed as Santa parade comes to town

Mini me: A little Santa joins in the fun.

After a boisterous warm-up of drums and limbs, the annual Santa Parade set off from Par-la-Ville car park tonight accompanied by a long train of parade floats .At the head of this year's parade are groups like the Lion's Club and the Xquisite Styles Dancers, with the Bermuda Long Riders getting ready to rumble on Front Street. In anticipation of Santa, families have thronged the sidewalks of Hamilton."I'm just here for my son," said spectator Tawana Gibbons as her four-year-old boy Zaki sat by the road with young friends. "I'm the grinch of the family."It was the standard refrain of parade participants: it's for the children. And, as the banner-bearing team from sponsors the MarketPlace came down Par-la-Ville Road, followed by Lions members and Little Miss Paradise Te'ja Watson, the excitement began. With Christmas lights on the Harleys, the Long Riders set off tooting their horns."This is our first year taking part," said Building Blocks Academy teacher Chandra Maybury. "As you can see, our children are very excited to be here — we're going to be dancing through Hamilton."The parade will loop down Front Street, up Court Street and back down Church Street, with Santa himself making an appearance.
