‘Ms Thang’ will focus on seniors for Christmas Wish List
After years of filling the void for children in need at Christmas, Kristy Burgess and the Phenomenal Women’s Association will focus on the “forgotten seniors” this year. Also known as Ms Thang, the former radio personality on HOTT 107.5 has identified at least 100 senior citizens “lost financially in the current economic downturn”.Hundreds of children received donated gifts during the past seven years, this year, the ‘Wish List Campaign” is geared for seniors “who have given so much” and Christmas “is a time to give back”.“Seniors are in tremendous need this year, many still live on their own and most times their pension cheque barely covers the basic essentials,” said Ms Burgess.“Many seniors have less than a few hundred dollars left after food, electricity and other expenses, barely enough to last them until the next pension cheque arrives.“We still have many seniors who live alone, who unfortunately do not have any surviving family members. The family plays a vital role but with the loss of jobs and rising redundancies, many of them are unable to assist their parents and grandparents,” she added.“The Phenomenal Women’s Association will give back to those who have tirelessly paved the way by simply saying ‘we love you and this Christmas we haven’t forgotten you’.“And we’re asking our community to open their hearts and take a moment to donate to this worthy cause.”Based on their research, Ms Burgess said many seniors will “survive” the Christmas Holiday but “unfortunately they will go without in the New Year”.Monetary donations can be made via the group’s HSBC charity account, cheques can be mailed to PO Box HM 2061 Hamilton, HM HX.Gift vouchers may also be purchased to pay utility bills for seniors at Belco, the Bermuda Telephone Company or Bermuda Gas & Utility. The same applies for vouchers for prescription medicine or groceries at most local pharmacies and grocery stores.Ms Burgess noted that 2012 has been a “challenging year for most”. “This year we decided to do something special for our seniors, I admire elderly people,” she said.“I often think of their struggle and what they had to endure to make sure my generation and others that came before me didn’t have to endure their pain. For that alone I’m thankful and this year we want to show our seniors that they are still loved and not forgotten.”The Phenomenal Women’s Association has been in existence for seven years. Their mantra is, in the words of Sir Winston Churchill “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”The group is hoping to assist as many seniors as possible through public support, they are also looking for volunteers. For more information e-mail phenomenal-lady@hotmail.com or contact Denise Wilson Adams at phenomenal-denise@hotmail.com.
