Family pays tribute to man who died on Christmas Eve
A sister who lost her teenaged brother in a tragic accident last Christmas Eve is lighting up her garden in a touching seasonal tribute.Andreia Borges, 25, has spent weeks with her family and friends creating a spectacular festive arrangement as a gift to Kevin Ledo, her Christmas-loving brother who suffered a fatal electric shock while trimming a hedge. The display in South Road, Paget — featuring Disney characters, Santa and elves, a snowman and traditional manger scene, all cut from wood and painted — will be switched on today to mark what would have been Mr Ledo’s 19th birthday.“I did it because I wanted people to see that even though he passed on the 24th of December, he did love Christmas and that was one of his favourite holidays.“I know he would have wanted me to continue it for Lucas, my two-year-old son.“It just feels good to know I could give him something.“I made every single thing here. We all painted it. Even Lucas helped with the painting.“When I showed my parents and saw them cry, I knew I had done a good job. With the lights, it just brings it all back.”Sister Victoria Ledo, 14, who helped with the painting, said: “I can’t buy Kevin anything, but I could give up my time to do something for him. It’s like a present to him from me.”Mr Ledo was working with his father Carlos Ledo in a garden in Warwick when the fatal accident happened.Mrs Borges said the year since had seen many ups and downs.“Kevin loved Christmas. He always dressed up as Santa, and he would go around to everyone and say I’m going to get you this and that.“Everything we’ve gone through, it’s always been a sign of him there; it always feels like his presence.“It hasn’t been easy, Christmas is going to be difficult from now on, but we will do it because it was his favourite holiday.“Christmas is about family and it’s a time to remember him. That’s my promise I said I was going to do. That’s my gift I can give him now.”Mrs Borges said anyone is welcome to visit the display, which will be switched on at 7pm at 51 South Road, Paget, behind St Michael’s Church.
