Close to 200 people turned out for a Christmas Day feast with all the trimmings at the Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Church on King Street.Noting that “service is the mandate of the church” Pastor Kenneth Manders said more than 180 guests were served with over 60 takeout plates. The annual event was sponsored by Bermuda CableVision. Pastor Manders described it as a “resounding success”.CableVision sales and marketing manager Rollin Nathan said the company purchased and cooked all the food for the meal.Overwhelmed by the number of volunteers, Mr Nathan thanked all those who turned up to assist.“We had at least 30 people from all walks of life, including children who came to lend a helping hand. We could not have taken on such a monumental task without their dedication and support.“So many people showed up to help cook, even clean for the day and we just want to say thank you,” said Mr Nathan.“Bermuda CableVision has always tried to serve the community and will continue help wherever we can in a troubled economy.”Meanwhile, a married couple served meals to the homeless on Court Street for their ninth consecutive year.Regina and Bill Peniston are both recovering addicts who will be celebrating 17 years drug-free in February. Both homeless at one point due to addiction, Ms Peniston said: “We remember what it was like to be out here with nowhere to live.”This year we had help from a sponsor who donated $1,000 to buy all the food. Its not as big as it usually is this time because things were really tight this year.”With the help of family members the couple served close to 150 people between 3.30 and 6pm. The also offered an array of clothing and other items free of charge.Mr and Ms Peniston serve hot homemade soup in Hamilton every Tuesday to help feed the homeless throughout the year. Plans are underway to register the couple’s cause as a charity.
