I want to know who my real mother and father are
A man who was adopted as a baby in Bermuda and taken to Canada by his new parents has launched a search for his blood family.Benjamin deGraaf was born on May 26, 1973 as Benjamin Trott, but his last name was changed after he was adopted, to match his new father’s.His adoptive parents are Canadian, and he moved with them to Canada at the age of three, where he has lived ever since. Now approaching 40, and expecting a baby in three months with wife Olivia, Mr deGraaf, from Toronto, wants to find out more about his Bermudian heritage. He wrote a letter to the editor of The Royal Gazette explaining: “I was officially adopted in 1974 by my foster parents who cared for me from the time of my birth. My adoptive parents were from Canada working and residing in Bermuda. I was adopted by a Caucasian family.“When my adoptive father’s work assignment was up my adoptive parents moved back to Canada where I immigrated with them and have resided ever since. I’m hoping someone might have some information that would lead me to my family.”Explaining why he is keen to track down his family, he explained: “I think I’m in a position in my life where I want to have some answers to who I am — understanding that a little bit deeper, and also understanding where I come from. There’s a lot of times when the questions of family and parents come up, and for me, the conversation only goes so far. I guess I am looking for some more.”Mr deGraaf — a youth worker who helps young and potential fathers — knows little about his birth parents. However, he was told by his adoptive parents that his mother was very young — perhaps only 15 or 16 years old.“Maybe economics played a part in things — that’s all I really know,” he said. “I don’t even know if my question would be ‘why did you give me up?’ At this time I am really curious to find out who my real mother and father are and if I have siblings or any other family. I would encourage people to come forward to help me achieve some closure.”Mr deGraaf added: “I can’t remember living in Bermuda, and I wish I could. I have seen photos of the pink sandy beaches and the beautiful ocean and I have seen video footage from my (adoptive) mom and dad and heard them talk about living there and driving around the Island on scooters. I have never been and it’s something I plan to do — I have heard it’s beautiful.”Anyone with information that could help Mr deGraaf track down his family can get in touch by e-mailing Olivia_barrett1977@yahoo.ca
