Workers Voice pulls out of Media Council
The Workers Voice has pulled out as a member of Bermuda’s Media Council. The withdrawal came after the Bermuda Industrial Union publication was ordered to issue an apology for “inaccurate” comments by columnist Alvin Williams that KFC “made a recent attempt to decertify the union”.Said a Media Council spokesman yesterday: “The correction has never been published.”The BIU insisted it refused to print the correction because of a pending legal case between it and KFC.Said union president Chris Furbert: “The Workers Voice withdrew its membership under protest as a result of it having been threatened with expulsion from the Media Foundation, the organisation under whose umbrella the Media Council operates.”It remained unclear whether the Council had the authority to take such action after seeking legal advice on the threatened expulsion, he said. Therefore, the union “decided to withdraw rather than be expelled”.Said Mr Furbert: “This decision has not been taken lightly, but there is pending litigation between the BIU and KFC regarding the matter of certification.”The BIU asked the Media Council to hold off on its decision until the completion of the court case in October, he added.“It is apparent that neither KFC nor the Media Council was willing to acquiesce to our request.“It is not simply a case of the BIU resigning because it has not gotten its own way, rather, the BIU requested that the Media Council apply the rules fairly and that it take into account the fact that the matters its ruling spoke to concern an ongoing Supreme Court dispute between KFC and BIU.”Mr Furbert said he regretted the matter had to be resolved in such a way and that he didn’t understand the Council’s “reluctance to respect the court process”.Mr Furbert concluded: “For the sake of our members, and in the best interest of the ongoing litigation which is scheduled to come on for hearing next month, we have determined the best course of action is to resign from the Media Council under protest.”
