Man, 47, killed in Morgan’s Point accident
Police have named Millard Bean, 47, of Smith’s parish, as the man who was killed at Morgan’s Point after part of a roof collapsed on him yesterday.Mr Bean, who The Royal Gazette understands was an employee of Island Construction, was pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial after being seriously injured in the accident at about 11.30am.A dilapidated house in a former barracks near Lexington Road inside the West End site was closed off for a forensics team and health and safety officers.According to Inspector Andy Morgan of the Public Protection Department, refurbishment of the buildings had been underway at the site. Police and fire service officers responded to a reported industrial accident.A spokesman at the scene said the victim had been struck by “a wooden structure”. An investigation continues into the matter.Lawyer Kim White released a statement of condolence on behalf of the Directors of Morgan’s Point Limited. Developers Craig Christensen, Brian Duperreault and Nelson Hunt are converting the brownfield site, a former military base, into a luxury resort.Under Government’s Office of Project Management and Procurement, asbestos removal at the base land began in October as part of ongoing remediations.The waters near the peninsula were declared off limits last week by Government for demolition.Insp Morgan said the latest work at the site had been “part of a large refurbishment project”.Island Construction head Zane DeSilva, who was off the island yesterday, told The Royal Gazette he couldn’t comment until details of the cause of the accident emerged.Police have assigned a Family Liaison Officer to Mr Bean’s family to assist them. The police service has extended its condolences to the family and friends of Mr Bean.
Bermuda’s last fatality in an industrial accident was 18-year-old Kevin Ledo, electrocuted on Christmas Eve, 2011, the Health and Safety office last night said.Mr Ledo, a landscaper, was killed when his saw touched a live wire while he worked in a garden in Smith’s.A Malaysian guest worker died in May 2010 after falling from a ladder at a construction site, and in August 2006, a 34-year-old guest worker lost his life while cutting back trees in Fairylands, when he was struck by a branch.Recent industrial accidents on the Island include the March 28, 2011 injury of a Cycle Car employee who fell while offloading a container at the company warehouse.
