City trash collected late after industrial action
Hamilton business workers were greeted by a pile up of trash along city streets when they arrived for work on Monday morning, due to an unscheduled work stoppage yesterday.A City of Hamilton spokesperson confirmed the trash was eventually collected shortly after 11am following “industrial action” by the sanitation workers”.“The industrial action affected the collection of garbage in the city,” said the spokesperson. “All staff who were involved in the industrial action were back at work by 11am.“The City of Hamilton management is in talks with the Bermuda Industrial Union to resolve this matter.”BIU president Chris Furbert said: “The workers had a meeting yesterday morning among themselves and later met with the BIU organiser. Another meeting was held at 2.30pm with the BIU and management.”According to Mr Furbert, the union is currently “awaiting management’s response to the concerns raised by the workers”.
