Residents urged to recycle electronic waste

With developments in technology advancing with increasing speed, it is perhaps not surprising that today’s ‘latest new thing’ soon becomes tomorrow’s trash. And that is why the Waste Management Section of the Ministry of Public Works will be holding its first e-Waste Recycling Day this Saturday.Residents are encouraged to hand in worn out electronics to be recycled everything from battery-operated toys and hair dryers all the way up to computers and other circuit board-containing equipment; any small appliance powered by batteries or power cord.Last year the Waste Management section recycled 134 x 20ft shipping container loads of recycling, exporting 84 container loads to the US recycling market and re-using 50 container loads of crushed glass in local construction projects.Exported container loads of recycling comprised of 18 containers of air conditioners, 26 containers of vehicle batteries, four containers of tin, two containers of aluminium, 11 containers of motor oil, one containers of fluorescent tubes, four containers of transformers, one container of household batteries and 17 containers of e-Waste.All recyclable materials, including e-Waste are sent to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved recycling facilities to ensure they are handled with maximum concern for the environment and worker safety. The Tynes Bay Waste to Energy Facility located on Palmetto Road, Devonshire will be accepting all electronic items between 9am and 5pm on Saturday, March 9.
