Marking International Women’s Day
Bermuda joined countries around the world in celebrating International Women’s Day yesterday.Amnesty International Bermuda and the Women’s Resource Centre issued a release in honour of the annual observance.“In Bermuda today women’s rights are largely enshrined in law but there remains a lingering prejudice, which can lead to women being treated as second-class citizens,” the statement read. “Freedom is a mental attitude, which has to be constantly stated and celebrated lest we forget the hard work and commitment of our forbearers.”Such freedoms aren’t as readily available elsewhere, the organisations pointed out.“We recognise that the freedoms we enjoy are not always so readily available in other countries. Whilst inequalities between men and women can be the result of custom, culture and religion, it remains our united belief that the right of women to be treated as equal to men, and for all people to be treated equally, is paramount.”
