Low-emissions cargo ship to arrive later this week
An unusual cargo vessel is expected to arrive in Bermuda later this week en route to the Azores.SV Tres Hombres, a 32m schooner, is said to be loaded with rum, cocoa beans, chocolate bars, honey and wine for sale in Europe. What it doesn’t have is an engine. The enterprise was started in 2009 by three friends, Arjen van der Veen, Jorne Langelaan and Andres Lackner as a real-world demonstration of low-emissions travel.Tres Hombres has made multiple Atlantic crossings, carrying up to 35 tons of cargo per trip. The ship is set to arrive in Hamilton on Friday or Saturday after departing the Dominican Republic last week. The ship also carries a crew of five professional sailors and as many as ten trainees. The trio, who have previously visited the Island on board the Tall Ship Europa and the Pierius Magnus, are in the process of developing a high-tech sailing vessel capable of carrying dozens of industrial containers.A spokesman for Tres Hombres said the vessel has room for three or four trainee crew members for travel from Bermuda to the Azores and then England.Interested persons can contact Sabine Fox at sabine@fairtransport.nl, or visit the Tres Hombres while it is in port this weekend.Useful website: www.svtreshombres.com.
