Bishop Kurtz ‘very pleased’ with choice of new Pope
The Catholic Church officially named Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina the new Pope yesterday. The new Pope, who has selected the name of Pope Francis I, was selected by a group of 115 cardinals. In order to be elected, Pope Francis had to earn 77 votes, a two-thirds majority.Bishop Robert Kurtz said yesterday he was “surprised and pleased” by the selection.“I was surprised, because I thought his age would eliminate him from consideration, surprised at how quickly he was elected, surprised by the fact that the Conclave elected a Jesuit to be Pope and surprised by the choice of the name Francis I.“And I am very pleased with the choice of Cardinal Bergoglio as Pope. I have long admired him as a leader among the Bishops of Latin America.“I believe he will bring a strong pastoral focus to the Papacy. As Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina he was known for his love and concern for the poor.“Lastly, I am proud that the Cardinals of the Conclave elected a representative of the Church in America to serve as the Successor of St Peter and the Bishop of Rome.”Pope Francis I replaces Pope Benedict XVI, who made the decision to step down last month saying that he was no longer strong enough to lead the church.
