The Tres Hombres, the last of its kind, has room for trainees for trans-Atlantic trip
The world’s only engineless trans-Atlantic cargo vessel — the Tres Hombres — has arrived in St George’s for a short rest, before continuing on its journey to the Azores. The tall ship is carrying luxury goods including rum, cocoa beans, chocolate bars, honey and wine for the European markets. The vessel has been in service since December 2009 and sails between Europe, Atlantic islands, the Caribbean and the US for eight months of the year.Current ship captain Andres Lackner is on board with ten other crew members from the UK, Holland, France, Austria, Italy and Croatia.Mr Lackner came up with the idea for the emission free ship, along with friends Arjen van der Veen and Jorne Langelaan. They hoped to provide an example to the rest of the world for what mercantile marine transportation could be like. The three men are no strangers to the Island after first meeting on board the tall ship Europa, during a journey from Southampton, UK, to Bermuda in 2000.They also sailed together on the self-built ten metre sail boat, called Pierius Magnus.Residents are invited to visit Tres Hombres, which is currently berthed near Tiger Bay in St George’s, and talk to the international crew members. The vessel currently has room for three to four trainee crew members to sail along and experience the journey from Bermuda to the Azores, and then on to the Uk.For more information on the opportunity, visit www.svtreshombres.com or e-mail Sabine Fox on sabine@fairtransport.nl.The vessel is expected to leave the Island on Monday or Tuesday.
