Fishcake competition added to KiteFest
Thousands of revellers are expected to head to Horseshoe Bay on Good Friday for the second KiteFest hosted by the Chewstick Foundation. The free event, featuring live music, kite-flying, egg-hunting, fun races and competitions, will kick off at about 10am and end at 6pm.Chewstick’s Gavin (Djata) Smith, the host for the day, told The Royal Gazette: “We are really excited to be able to go forward with the event.“I think last year it was estimated between four and 5,000 people came. It will be probably be the same sort of figure this year.“There is the St David’s event that is on as well. That has a big draw as well and is an awesome event too. I think we are looking at having a really good, fun day full of awesome stuff.“We are really looking forward to it and we just want everyone to come out and enjoy the atmosphere.”Chewstick took over the festival from the United Bermuda Party for the first time last year but earlier this month it looked like it might have to be cancelled as the required permit had not been granted. The issue was resolved and Mr Smith said Chewstick was grateful to the Ministry of Environment and Department of Tourism for backing the event, as well as private sector sponsors BTC, Logic and KeyTech. This year will see a fishcake contest take place for the first time, with former politician Dale Butler, the Island’s unofficial Fishcake King, taking part in the judging. Those hoping to win Fishcake of the Year 2013 need to take four fishcakes to the beach to be sampled by the judges. The annual kite competition will be judged between noon and 2pm with categories including Best Boxy (i.e. made from fennel sticks), Biggest Kite, Smallest Kite, Best Design, Best Traditional Kite, Best Innovative Design, Loudest Kite and Ugliest Kite.Music performers set to appear include Christina Frith, Bermuda Squad, Rivah and Mr Smith himself. The Good Friday event in St David’s is at St David’s Cricket Club from 11am to 6pm and also features kite-flying, competitions and races.lUseful website: www.chewstick.org.
