Redgrave returns for Hackers defence
Sir Steve Redgrave is returning to Bermuda next month to defend his Hackers Cup title, and is bringing a host of big-name celebrities with him.
The Olympian will captain a team that includes Sky Sports presenter Sara Stirk, TV’s Johnny Vaughan, and veteran actor James Bolam MBE.
A group of well-respected British journalists, led by veteran golf writer Peter Corrigan, will once again provide the opposition in an event that is being sponsored by British Airways, Fairmont Southampton and The Bermuda Department of Tourism.
The Hackers Cup, the brainchild of late Peter Tory, Fleet Street Columnist, his brother Mike Winfield, then Port Royal Golf Club’s Andrew Brooks and Elizabeth Ward, pits a team of celebrities against a team of journalists over two days of golf at Tucker’s Point and Port Royal.
A golf tournament on the surface, the Cup generates a barrage of publicity for the Island, and following the inaugural event in 2011, Bermuda was featured on Sky Sports News, Al Jazerra Sports, the BBC, The Independent and a host of blogs and Twitter feeds.
Next month’s event will take place from April 7 to April 12, and will feature an AMAM event, two days of the Hackers Cup, and see Sir Steve visit the Bermuda Diabetes Association and the Bermuda Rowing Association to encourage them in their work.
“We are very fortunate to be able to welcome back to Bermuda, Sir Steve Redgrave, the captain of the winning Celebrity team from 2011,” said the organisers. “Sir Steve will also be visiting with the Bermuda Diabetes Association and the Bermuda Rowing Association. Steve gave of his time and valuable expertise last time, and is truly committed to Bermuda.
“British Airways were so impressed with the success of our last event that they will again fly all of our guests to Bermuda, Club World, and will be represented in the event by two senior executives, Richard Tams, Head of UK & Ireland Sales and Marketing, British Airways and Iberia and Keith Chuter, Sales Manager, Specialised Markets and Marianne Wilcox, head of BA in Bermuda.
“Fairmont Southampton are joining forces with us to provide accommodation in Fairmont Gold, and The Bermuda Department of Tourism will further support the event. HSBC are planning a special event at their Harbourview Building for our visitors.
“We are also grateful to Goslings, Dunkley’s Dairy and of course the three courses Turtle Hill, Tuckers Point, and Port Royal for their support. Without our sponsors this event simply could not take place. The Hackers Cup is not a money making event, it is about Bermuda and the promotion of our Island in the UK market.”
Fancy playing a round of golf with Sir Steve Redgrave? How about 18 holes with Golf Channel presenter and seven-handicapper Sara Stirk?
Both Sir Steve and Ms Stirk will be in Bermuda as members of the celebrity team competing in next month’s Hackers Cup, and as part of the event will be participating in an AMAM at Fairmont Southampton’s Turtle Hill Golf Club on Monday, April 8.
Other celebrities pencilled in for the tournament include actors James Bolam MBE (The Likely Lads, New Tricks), Warren Clarke (A Clockwork Orange, Dalziel and Pascoe), and broadcaster Johnny Vaughan (The Big Breakfast, Capital Radio).
The media team includes the likes of veteran golf writer Peter Corrigan, Phillipa Kennedy OBE, and Simon Kelner, the former editor-in-chief of The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers.
The AMAM, which starts at 2pm, is open to all Bermuda residents. Places are $200 a person, and entrants will be placed in teams with a celebrity or journalist as captain.
