Fish fry for India mission
The Bermuda Overseas Missions (BOM) are working to raise funds to send 38 Bermudians to India to join a Habitat for Humanity (International) building project. This Friday, starting at 4pm, BOM will be hosting a fish fry dinner at Christ Church in Warwick.BOM president David Thompson said the organisation hosted a similar fundraiser last year for a trip to Paraguay, selling 850 dinners and raising $13,000 after costs.“We’re hoping to repeat this effort,” he said. “All the proceeds from the fundraiser are 100 percent dedicated to trip costs. We use the proceeds to help sponsor students in particular who want to go and cannot afford the full price of the trip.“We also use part of the proceeds to help purchase additional tools and materials that we will need when we are in India constructing homes.”Since 2003, a Bermudian contingent has taken part in build efforts across the world, including Bolivia, Romania, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. This year’s work will take place in Kerala, India. While the state has the country’s highest literacy rate and lowest child mortality rate, many rural communities are hard struck by poverty and many dwellings lack electricity and running water.Every year, Habitat India hosts as many as 50 international teams to take part in builds across the country.Mr Thompson said: “We are excited about our trip to southern India. The subcontinent mission will offer an amazing opportunity for our volunteers to assist families in need and at the same time offers the adventure of a lifetime.“With 60 percent of our volunteers being local students, this type of charitable giving is something that will impact the lives of these young Bermudians for many years to come.“Volunteers contribute their own labour, or sweat equity, and funds raised help pay for construction materials and the cost of building homes for these impoverished families.”
