Motorists turned away from dry gas stations

Customers looking to buy gas at two of the Island’s filling stations left disappointed yesterday for the second time in a week. The Collector’s Hill and the Richmond Road Esso stations were both forced to turn customers away for a time after the stations ran out of fuel. Service later resumed after additional fuel was delivered. Both stations also ran out of fuel on Friday, while customers were also turned away from the Warwick Esso station after a technical problem left the station unable to pump gas.Efforts by this newspaper to contact the general manager for the gas stations, Steven DeCosta, were unsuccessful yesterday. However, he reportedly told ZBM News that the issue was related to a combination of heavy demand and not enough fuel being ordered.Premier Craig Cannonier, who owns all three stations, said yesterday he is not involved in the day to day running of the operation for several years, but had been informed about what took place.Mr Cannonier said: “The Warwick station had technical issues. There was fuel in the tanks, but the pumps weren’t bringing it up.“Unfortunately, at the same time, we had an ordering issue. I don’t think it’s something to be alarmed about.”The Premier also denied reports that he had altered travel arrangements in response to the incident.Mr Cannonier had been in New York to attend the christening of the Norwegian Breakaway, but had always been scheduled to return to the Island on Sunday.“I’m very much concerned about speculative stuff that has no foundation to it,” he said. “This speculation of me having to rush home for the business is quite concerning to me.“The business continues to grow in this environment, but has challenges as every other business does.”
