What to do at 60? Kayak all the way around Bermuda
Road safety expert Joseph Froncioni opted for a more slow-paced mode of transport to get around the Island yesterday. But that doesn’t mean to say the alcohol awareness campaigner and former head of the Road Safety Council had a leisurely journey. For the surgeon took almost nine hours to kayak the 69km miles around the Island to celebrate his 60th birthday.Dr Froncioni spent six months training for his marathon effort and was on the water before first light in order to give himself plenty of time to complete his task.Daughter Alex Gibbons said: “As a new grandfather, dad had been waiting for the perfect day to set out and, on Thursday, the weather looked favourable for today.“He got up at 4.15 this morning and walked from his house to the boat and canoe club where he started his journey. He encountered a couple of squalls on the south shore and choppy weather, but dad wanted to do this completely solo — no boats, no help, just completely on his own.“He kayaked a total of 69km in eight hours and 51 minutes. When he was done he took his kayak out of the water and walked home, tired but very happy.”
