Belco hands out seven Maths Awards to top students
Some of the Island’s top maths whizzes should find it easier to balance their budget books when they head off to university in September — thanks to some financial support from Belco.The Bermuda Electric Light Company has presented seven graduating high school seniors with the company’s Maths Award and cheques for $750 each.Seniors with the highest cumulative average in mathematics for the entire four years of high school receive the BELCO Maths Award each year.A company spokesman said: “Mathematics is key to Belco’s operations as the company’s engineers and technical staff rely on maths to plan for Bermuda’s energy needs, and to provide a secure, reliable, safe and sustainable electric power system.“Belco hopes to encourage more young people to pursue studies in maths, as well as science, technology and engineering through its annual Maths Awards to graduating seniors.”This year’s recipients are: David Simmons, Berkeley Institute; Connie Campbell, Bermuda High School; Deidra Ferguson, Bermuda Institute; Daniel Walker, CedarBridge Academy; Peter Sousa, Mount Saint Agnes Academy; Xiaoyu Sun, Saltus Grammar School; and Owen Siese, Warwick Academy.
