A Sandys teen has raised $1,000 in aid of her school — with a little help from her mother.Aspiro Cannonier, 13, took it upon herself to help Sandys Secondary Middle School after it emerged from PTA meetings that money would be welcome for basic everyday requirements.“Aspiro wanted to help, and the bake sale was what she wanted to do,” said father Edwin Cannonier, adding: “I can’t bake.”But Aspiro’s mother Queena can — following in the footsteps of her own mother, east end restaurateur Sheila Reid, who won fame locally and abroad for her pies.Mrs Cannonier said the two went ahead with the blessing of school principal Timothy Jackson.“I didn’t expect we would end up making so much,” she added.With her daughter’s help, Mrs Cannonier set to baking lemon and coconut custard tarts, ‘flying saucers’, mini doughnuts and chocolate chip cookies.Starting in May and ending mid-June, Aspiro helped her mother sell baked goods at the school during lunches, with Mr Cannonier turning up when his job permitted.Said Mrs Cannonier: “She even had some of her school friends come and volunteer — they were able to use them towards their community hours.”The family hit the $1,000 mark shortly before the end of the school year.“Both Aspiro and I know it will be put to good use,” her mother said.“I am hoping this inspires other young people to get motivated and do more for their schools instead of waiting for the schools to ask.”Asked about his daughter’s baking skills, Mr Cannonier told The Royal Gazette: “I’m still leaving that out for the verdict. Right now she’s hanging on momma’s apron strings.”Aspiro said: “I didn’t do anything — I just helped. ”
