School team jump into world championships

Jump to it: The Somersfield Academy Star Squad are competing in the World Jump Rope Championships in Florida this weekend.

Somersfield Academy students are jumping rope on the world stage.Eleven students along with their coaches Jump 2B Fit director Sionna Barto and Somersfield Academy MYP gym teacher Irene Pimental are competing in the World Jump Rope Championship and Camp at the UCF Arena in Orlando, Florida which began yesterday and finishes on Monday.The Somersfield Academy students competing range from ages 10 to 14 and include Carissa DaSilva, Charlotte Dinsmore, Chole McCallum, Hasna Turner, Jahzara Pluck Ming, Rylee Gardner, Sebastin Lee, Serena Brown, Sophia Richmond, Toby Gibbons and Yusef Bushara.The competitors will be judged based on a number of expectations such as speed and power, freestyle presentation, freestyle content, group jumping, and levels of difficulty ranging from single to double dutch style rope techniques.Each competitor will be watched by judges with mechanical hand-held clickers to ensure accuracy of consecutive successful jumps, speed and entertainment value given. Judges will give their ratings of competitors from level one to five on difficulty. For judging density (use of sequences and combinations versus isolated skills, along with number and length of breaks and transitions in routine), the judges will grade based on levels, namely: basic, elementary, intermediate, advanced and masters.Donna Richmond, administrator of Somersfield Academy and parent of one the competitors, explained how the students involvement came about.“We had the Comet Skippers come and visit the school in February to do a workshop and the children loved it,” she said. “The children started skipping right away and it motivated the rest of the students to do it as well.”The live stream of the event is broadcasted online at the World Jump Rope Championship and Camp website: http://worldjumprope.org/
