Marine Police on the move
Marine Police are getting a new home, in Dockyard.Having recently moved out of their Barr’s Bay Park home in Hamilton, the force are to be relocated to a listed building on Sally Port Lane.According to planning documents, the Development Applications Committee recently approved plans to convert a 19th century building, that previously housed Dockyard Canvas, into the new headquarters for the unit.“The bulk of the work being proposes will involve gutting the interior to create new bathrooms, shower facilities, kitchen area, locker room and offices,” a DAC assessment report said.According to planning documents submitted by Wedco, the main room of the building will feature two offices and a reception area, along with the locker, bathroom and showers, along with a main room to feature several desks, a meeting table and a television. The application also specified that the furniture used would be the same used in the unit’s former headquarters. The proposal also included the replacement of an exterior double door in the existing storage area with a single hung door, along with the removal and blocking of two windows into the storage room. Masonry work will be carried out to ensure that the appearance matches the existing walls.Marine Police left their former headquarters with the rising cost of renting the facility reportedly being a key factor. Since the old facility closed in May, the unit has been based at the Police COMOPS Building in Prospect, Devonshire.A spokesman for the service said in May that they hoped to move into new facilities in Dockyard by the start of next month and promised there would be no disruption of service caused by the move.
