The Hamilton Parish Hot Peppers won gold in Orlando recently, with the under-14 team named dual champions.Around 40 young members of the Hamilton Parish Youth Soccer Programme took part in the AC Milan Florida Cup Soccer Tournament. While the event was plagued by foul weather which caused numerous game cancellations, programme managers said the young players shone in international competition.Under-12 coach Kevin Simpson said: “The boys adapted to the wet conditions very well. We lost our first game, but then rebounded with two victories in our group to put us in the finals. The team rose to the occasion.”He said the team were set to go head to head with AC Milan Junior International Elite, but after 15 minutes of play the game was cancelled due to the weather with a score of 1-1.As a result, the game was ruled a draw and both teams were named duel champions.Mr Simpson said the results demonstrated that the players were able to go toe-to-toe with international competition and stick to the game plan.“Well done to the boys and parents for bringing back the trophy to our Island,” he said.Meanwhile the programme’s under nine teams, due to a lack of teams in the division, was bumped up to the Under-10/ Under-11 division, playing in a league format with seven other teams. Despite facing up to older competition they remained competitive.Coach Corey Hill said: “HPWC (Maroon) got off to a slow start with one draw, one loss and one win respectively. We had two games cancelled because of weather, which cost us a higher finish in the table and ended up finishing fourth, two points behind the eventual winners.“Notwithstanding, we had a few outstanding performances by LJ Lewis, who finished with five goals, and the hard working Deniche Hill, who finished with three goals. Both where a constant threat throughout.“HPWC (Yellow) won one and lost three, finishing sixth. They also had one game cancelled because of weather. We also had a few outstanding performances by Denhim Minors ,who finished with six goals, while Zahni Burgess and Jazendae Douglas where also outstanding in defence. We also had Josh Lipschutz, who did an amazing job in goal.“Overall, it was a tremendous effort by all the boys and, as a coach, I’m very proud to say that on and off the field these kids were excellent and they did themselves, their families and Bermuda proud.”
