Fire extinguishing teenagers are praised for doing the right thing
Two young Bermudians who fought a brush fire with buckets of water have been honoured for their service.D’Undre Seymour and Benjamin Furqan, both 14, impressed the Bermuda Fire Service last week when it responded to a reported brush fire only to find the teenagers had already extinguished the blaze. The teenagers told The Royal Gazette they were returning from Admiralty Park, where they help out with a camp, when D’Undre saw a fire in a grassy area of Berkeley Road.Benjamin said: “My coach had these big water bottles in his car and we were trying to fight the fire with the water bottles, but the fire wasn’t going out and we ran out of water.”The fire slowly spread, covering an area around five feet wide, but the teens continued to battle the blaze. He said: “There was a bucket outside my house, so I got that and started to fill it up.”Benjamin grabbed another bucket, and the two began to run water to the fire to put the fire out and limit its spread. After several minutes of work the fire was finally extinguished. It was then that a team of firefighters, led by Sgt Robert Fox, arrived. Sgt Fox said: “As we turned up Berkeley Road we saw two young men in the middle of the road. When we got there the fire was extinguished, so we asked them what they saw.“The first thing they asked was: ‘Can you take our picture?’ I said unfortunately I didn’t have a camera, but give me your names and contact numbers and I’ll make sure you get recognised.“We always look at the negative, but these are two positive young gentlemen who deserve recognition.”Yesterday, the two teenagers were given certificates, along with hats and T-shirts, from the Bermuda Fire Service at a ceremony at the Hamilton Fire Station.Chief Fire Officer Lloyd Burchall said: “We teach teamwork, and we teach people to access a situation and, if it’s safe enough to act, then act. I think these two young gentlemen have acted in the same spirit.“Maybe one day you will decide to be a firefighter and, if you do, we will welcome you on board. Hopefully you won’t have to put out any more fires until you actually go on the firetruck.”Staff Officer for the Bermuda Fire Service Leonard Davis said: “These young men are 14 years old. We all know that we are in troubling times for 14-year-old men in this country, so we tend to highlight the negative.“We have a commitment to highlight the positive. BFRS recognises that we have challenges too finding good young men. So when they are recognised they must be highlighted. I had the opportunity to talk to them and, believe it or not, they are outstanding.”Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley also praised the young men for their actions, describing them as role models for their peers.“On behalf of the Premier and the Government of Bermuda, I want to thank you, and I want to thank your parents for doing a tremendous job,” he said.Asked if they could give any advice to others who might find themself in a similar situation, D’Undre said: “Just do the right thing.”
