Intercepting drugs on gang planks makes sense to Minister
The interception of drugs on cruise ships should be done on the gang plank instead of in the cabins, according to Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley. However he said that when enforcement agencies receive information that a large quantities of drugs are on board, they should take the appropriate measures.“Within the Ministry we have talked to our colleagues throughout Government about making sure that we continue to enforce these laws, but deal with those laws at a different point of contact,” Mr Dunkley said.“It is our approach that we would like to deal with it at the gang plank, so [if] you are going to come off a cruise ship, you are going to be dealt with. We are going to deal with those challenges.”The comments came during a press conference after Mr Dunkley was asked about cabin searches being performed on the cruise ships resulting in the seizure of small quantities of cannabis.“The Bermuda Government, the current government and former government, have always been serious about the challenges we face with illicit drugs,” Mr Dunkley said. “We need to pay attention to them because drugs continue to ruin people’s lives and young people’s lives.”He said the matter relating to the search of cabins is something that the Ministry has taken a look at, noting the need to prevent the importation of drugs and the need to attract visitors to return to the Island must be balanced.“I think that clearly the cruise ships companies do a commendable job at telling their passengers what the laws of Bermuda are, and what we want to try to do as the Government of Bermuda is we want to make sure that those people who come to our Island get to enjoy our Island and the experience we offer here, and leave with a positive attitude about what happened here and can come again,” he said.“Now having said that, if the intelligence reports that there is significant quantities on those ships then, whether it’s Bermuda Police Service in conjunction with Border Control or Customs Service, they will go on there and do what they have to do.“I think the message has been sent that we want our gang planks to be policed in an appropriate way, and use your intelligence accordingly to conduct the policies in the fashion that people would expect and support.”
