Around 70 Bermudians jumped at the opportunity to apply for jobs with Norwegian Cruise Lines at a recruitment session at Bermuda College.Director of Workforce Development George Outerbridge said yesterday: “So far the turnout has been very good. This morning we had probably around 30 people, this afternoon about 40. Everyone seems enthusiastic.“We are looking at all avenues to find employment for people, so this is thinking outside the box and giving Bermudians an opportunity.”The employment sessions were organised by the cruise line and the Department of Workforce Development in an effort to make job opportunities available to interested Bermudians. Those who attended the event were given a presentation by NCL staff, including the NCL’s recruitment manager from Miami on what the cruise line is looking for, and highlighting the work opportunities on the ships.Following the presentation, the attendees were given an opportunity to fill out application forms before arranging interviews for a number of potential posts, including positions as cooks, bakers, bar and restaurant staff, as well as engine and deck seafarers.“Once that happens, the gentlemen will be able to take those applications back to Miami and by next week actually be able to make a decision to be hired or not,” Mr Outerbridge said. “By next week they should know if they have a job.“After that, it could be another two to four months before deployment because after that there’s a police check, a drug test, a medical test. It’s once all those are completed that they are looking at deployment.“The deployment isn’t up to the interviewees, it’s up to the cruise ship people to determine where they are best suited.”While Mr Outerbridge said the intention was to only perform interviews today, anyone who attends today looking for information will not leave disappointed.“When we advertised it, we advertised it for July 23 and 24, so I’m taking people whenever they come,” he said. “If we have people coming in for the first time, they are not going to be turned away.“They will get an information session, even if it’s just one-on-one, and they will have the opportunity to get an interview.”Those interested in receiving more information can contact the Department of Workforce Development or www.gov.bm.
