A Police investigation has been launched into an incident that marred yesterday’s Annual Rubis Around the Island Powerboat Race.It is understood that powerboat driver Damon Morris was arrested in connection with taking part in the race without proper authorisation.Police spokesman Robin Simmons confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway but did not offer any comment on claims suggesting that the powerboat driver had been arrested.“Police have received a report of an unauthorised powerboat taking part in the Round the Island powerboat race on Sunday, August 11,” Mr Simmons told The Royal Gazette. “Inquiries are ongoing.”According to a Bermuda Power Boat Association (BPA) spokesperson, Mr Morris was deemed ineligible to compete after failing to meet all of the pre-race scrutinisation, undergoing technical inspection and attending the driver’s meeting.“D-48 (Morris) did not meet race requirements the day before and was therefore advised that he was unable to race,” the spokesperson said. “So he decided on his own volition to come down and put his boat over and start the race unofficially.“He did start the race and marine police were informed and I believe they got him somewhere along South Shore. Whether or not he broke down or they intercepted him, we are not sure about. But we do know they got him down South Shore.”When asked was Mr Morris arrested by marine police, the BPA spokesperson replied: “Unofficially, that’s what we’ve heard.”Meanwhile, Around the Island Race race director Ernie Mello revealed that Mr Morris has already been served with a one-year suspension for breaking race protocol.“He broke like ten rules,” Mr Mello said.Mr Mello said the driver cannot appeal against the disciplinary sanctions imposed against him.Due to the potential legal proceedings in this case, The Royal Gazette has decided not to allow comments on this story.
